Clarification re “the secure electronic exchange of documents” we noted as one of the features of the Secure Client Portal feature of this web site. – January 21, 2013
The most significant feature you’ll see under Client Resources is your personal portal for the secure electronic exchange of documents. That’s a bit misleading, though. The documents primarily flow from us to you. It’s where you’ll retrieve your organizer and where you’ll retrieve your completed return. This year we’ve moved to an electronic document management system. Aside from storing the digital image of your return, scanned documents are the centerpiece of the system. The documents scanned are primarily your source documents – W-2’s and the entire set of 1098 and 1099 forms. You’ll still need to send or deliver all of those original source documents to us. Why not send copies or your own scans, you ask? Because electronic document management systems rely heavily on optical character recognition (OCR) technology; and while OCR technology works very well with scans of original documents; not so much with 2nd generation copies.
